The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park

The catalyst for much of the growth and development for Historic Downtown Wilson is the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park. This park is a marvelous display of North Carolina's State Folk Art, the Whirligigs. These 50-60 foot spinning structures were created by Wilson's very own Vollis Simpson, a World War II veteran who began making these moving sculptures after retiring from his machine repair shop.

On the downtown streets surrounding the Whirligig Park, you can now find a variety of things to do, that are fun for the whole family. Shops, restaurants, and even a Whirligig Museum scatter the quaint downtown area. Just a block away, nestled at 222 Tarboro Street, is Whirligig Popcorn Shoppe. A local, family owned- gourmet popcorn shoppe. This charming shop is a destination spot for all families. Featuring more than just popcorn, Whirligig Popcorn Shoppe offers an array of candies, sweet treats, and toys, including TY Beanie Babies. Samples are always free, and you can try as many of their 20+ flavors as you desire!
